Experts meeting at the Arab League in Cairo on Thursday discussed designing workable measures to counter extremist and terrorist groups in the region and preserve Arab national security.
The meeting aims at concluding applicable measures for combating terrorism to function as the major Arab move to counter in that respect, Arab League Deputy Secretary-General Ahmed Ben Helli addressed the gathering.
The would-be measures will be submitted to the Arab Foreign Ministers due to meet in Cairo next Thursday for approval, Ben Helli said. They might also be referred to the Arab summit Egypt hosts in March.
According to the League's senior official, terrorism has reached a menacing level, and is no longer confined to groups, but organizations that seize territories and pose a threat to territorial integrity of countries, forming a threat to the Arab national security.
Ben Helli urged a review of the Arab Treaty of Joint Defense and the Arab Pact for Combating Terrorism, as references for any relevant Arab future action.
On their 7 September 2014 meeting, the Arab Foreign Ministers entrusted the League Secretary-General with preparing a comprehensive study comprising workable proposals for combating terrorism, Ben Helli said.
He added that the Study has been prepared by specialized experts and copies have been sent to Foreign Ministers for remarks.
