The Arab League welcomed Greece’s parliament unanimous approval on Tuesday of a nonbinding bill calling on the country’s government to formally recognize Palestinian statehood.

The League assistant secretary general for Palestine sector Saed Abu Ali described the step as positive and important on the way of peace.

He said that Greece has been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian people at international arenas, hailing the Greek stance towards the Palestinian cause.

The Greek parliament took the decision, during an official three-day visit of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to Athens.

House Speaker Nikos Voutsis read out a resolution calling for the recognition and handed a copy of it to Abbas.
