Cairo - Arab Today
Arab Parliament Speaker Ahmed al Jarwan lauded the Greek parliament's unanimous decision to officially recognize the Palestinian state.
In a statement on Thursday, Jarwan congratulated the Palestinian government and people, lauding the strenuous diplomatic efforts, exerted by the Palestinian government, leading to similar stances by a number of European and Latin American countries.
Jarwan also urged other world parliaments and governments to recognize the Palestinian state and support the right of the Palestinian people to have their independent state with Al Quds as its capital.
The Arab Parliament had earlier contacted world and regional parliaments to urge them recognize Palestine, Jarwan noted, affirming that a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian crisis would serve efforts to stabilize regional and international security.
On Tuesday, Greece’s parliament unanimously approved a nonbinding resolution calling on the country’s government to formally recognize Palestinian statehood, during an official three-day visit of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to Athens.
House Speaker Nikos Voutsis read out a resolution calling for the recognition and handed a copy of it to Abbas.
The resolution is symbolic in nature and does not pave the way for an official recognition of the Palestinian state.
