Assad forces extended control over seven villages in Latakia countryside on Sunday after fierce clashes with opposition forces, Al Arabiya channel reported.

The government forces were backed during the clashes by Russian fighter jets.

The Assad forces have been achieving progress in their fight against opposition and militias since Russia announced its military intervention in Syria with air strikes and a build-up of troops on the ground four months ago.
