Counselor Mohamed Hettah, the head of Nasr City Prosecution, ordered on Monday the release of cartoonist Islam Gawish who was arrested Sunday afternoon for operating a website without permission and possessing pirated copies of software.
Investigations revealed that Gawish has no links with any banned groups and that his office work was restricted to technical and artistic activities.
Islam Gawish was arrested Sunday afternoon along with an accountant working for the website.
The accountant was released, but Gawish remained in custody until today.
An interior ministry statement had said the popular social media cartoonist was arrested for running "his own website" without the authorization of the Ministry of Telecommunications.
