The Egyptian Navy foiled a bid to smuggle a large amount of narcotic pills off the coast of Matrouh.
Coast guards suspected a small boat sailing in the vicinity of the army's Matrouh naval base and asked it to stop for inspection, army spokesman Mohamed Samir said.
The small boat refused to comply and sped toward the coast before its occupiers abandoned it on the beach, Samir said.
Inspecting the boat, coast guards found a total of 1.4 million Tamol and Tramadol tablets, the spokesman said.
The boat and tablets were seized and handed over to relevant authorities to start legal action.
