The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) received a membership request from South Sudan, an official said.

The request should be first approved by the South Sudanese parliament to meet requirements of membership, said COMESA director for trade, customs and monetary affairs Francis Mangani.

Approval of a request was adjourned following a plea by the South Sudan's parliament to reconsider the idea, Mangani said.
