Coordination and cooperation between all relevant bodies in Egypt and Sudan contributed to the release of the Egyptian students, who were held in custody in Sudan for leaking exams and cheating, said Egypt's Consul General in Sudan Wiam Sweilem.

During his meeting Wednesday at the Egyptian General Consulate in Khartoum with the Egyptian Ambassador in Sudan Osama Sahltout and the released Egyptian students and their parents, Sweilem extended thanks to the Sudanese security bodies and the Sudanese national intelligence under Mohamed Atta and his coordination over the past days with the Head of the Egyptian Intelligence.

Directives by the Sudanese presidency also contributed to the release of the Egyptian students, he added.

The Egyptian Consulate and Embassy in Khartoum followed up the developments in this case over the past days, he said.

He further hailed efforts exerted by Egypt's Immigration Minister Nabila Makram to Sudan and her consultations with the Sudanese officials.

The students will not be deported but they may leave Sudan anytime they want, he said.

The 26 Egyptian secondary school students were arrested in Sudan in late March, along with students of other nationalities, on charges of leaking school exams.

Sudan will apply only an educational punishment, by depriving the students from participating in this year's high school exams.
