A report by a fact finding committee formed by Abdel Fattah El Sisi to investigate alleged corruption incidents in 2015 has revealed that the figures submitted were false and exaggerated.
Chairman of the Central Auditing Organization (CAO) Hisham Genaina had estimated the corruption bill to total some 600 billion pounds.
But the report indicates that some numbers had been calculated more than one time under different terms and in more than one position.
The report cited 174 million pounds lost to encroachments in Sadat City, when all encroachments had been removed in 2015.
The committee said that figures from previous years had been added without any correction to the 2015 corruption file. The file included, for instance, encroachments on Awqaf Ministry lands that date back to the 20s of last century and building violations at the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) since 1979.
The committee made it clear that it contacted the CAO chairman on December 27, 2015 to ask about the figures, adding that Genaina informed them that a study had been made by a technical panel that put the 2012-2015 corruption bill at 600 billion pounds.
Genaina did send a copy of the study to the committee without any reference to the time it took, the report said.
