At least 423 people were arrested in Tunisia for being involved in acts of looting and violence, Tunisian interior ministry spokesman Walid Alloukina said Sunday.

Eighty four of them were arrested for curfew violations, he added.

Security across the country has improved, except Kairouan and Gafsa cities where clashes between protesters and security forces are still taking place.

Unrest has been running high in Kasserine and other parts of the North African country since last week after the death of a local man whose name was removed from a list of hires for public sector jobs, forcing the country to impose a curfew on Friday.

The government also announced a program to ease unemployment rate.

The protests are the worst social unrest since the 2011 revolution.
