At least 10 suspected militants were killed and 10 others injured in a joint military and police campaign on militant hideouts in the restive Sinai Peninsula.In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Armed Forces Spokesman Colonel Ahmad Ali said 11 others were arrested in the crackdown including a "dangerous militant." Ali pointed out that the campaign also resulted in the demolishing of five smuggling tunnels that links Egypt's Sinai to the Palestinian Gaza Strip, thus taking the number of destroyed tunnels since February 22, up to 39 tunnels.He added that the forces have seized 30 detonators that are used in the donation of home-made bombs.Sinai Peninsula is largely demilitarized as part of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty of 1979 but Israel has approved troop reinforcements to combat militants and smuggling by Palestinians into Gaza.It has suffered a security vacuum since the January 2011uprisingwhichoustedpresidentHosniMubarak'sregime.ThesituationescalatedaftertheousterofpresidentMohammad Morsi on 3 July and the subsequent crackdown on his supportersacross thecountry.
