Egypt, France can play major role in support of Palestinian cause

Egypt and France can play a major role in support of the Palestinian cause either in the UNSC or the UN, said Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative Movement Mustafa al Barghouti.

In an interview with MENA correspondent here on Sunday, Barghouti said that Egypt, in its capacity as a non-permanent member at the UNSC and its crucial role, can coordinate and consult with France, in its capacity as permanent member at the UNSC, regarding the Palestinian cause.

The Palestinian leadership with all its political levels is holds continued consultations with the Egyptian officials, the latest of which was the meeting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in Addis Ababa, he affirmed.

He, meanwhile, revealed for the first time the great role played by Egypt's authorities to release the bodies of the martyrs, which were held by the Israeli authorities.

France's decision to recognize the Palestinian state if it fails to break a deadlock between the Israelis and Palestinians in the coming weeks, will force more countries to recognize the rights of the Palestinian people and then recognize the Palestinian state, with Al Quds (occupied East Jerusalem) as its capital, he said.

The recent remarks by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on Palestine are considered a progress for the diplomatic efforts of the Palestinian leaderships at all levels, he said, expecting Israel and the US to prevent the convocation of the international conference, which is due to be hosted by France.

Fabius announced on Friday that France was trying to convene an international peace summit to renew diplomatic efforts by Israel and the Palestinians. He said that if diplomacy failed, France would formally recognize a Palestinian state.
