Italian youth Giulio Regeni

Egypt's Ambassador in Rome Amr Helmy said on Friday that the government is seriously and objectively investigating the ambiguous death of an Italian young man in Cairo and fully cooperating with the Italian authorities.

"The body of Giulio Regeni will be returned to Italy as soon as possible and an Italian mission will arrive in Cairo today to follow up the ongoing investigations into the circumstances of the death of the Italian youth to identify the culprits," the Egyptian diplomat told the Italian news agency.

Regeni, 28, disappeared on the evening of January 25, after leaving his home in Giza to meet a friend. His body was found on a road on Cairo's western outskirts on Wednesday.

The ambassador stressed that the investigations are transparent and objective and are carried out in full cooperation with Italy amid Egypt's full understanding of how the incident is sensitive in the Italian official and popular circles.

He called for "not giving an opportunity to some parties who are seeking to harm the distinguished relations between the two countries."

He also offered sincere condolences to the government and people of Italy and the family of the victim.

"The death of the Italian man will not go unpunished," he asserted.
