United Nations General Assembly

Egypt is keen on participating effectively in all activities that are held on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly meetings, now in session here, said Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Alaa Youssef on Friday.

In press statements, he added that Egypt is seeking this way to expound its viewpoint regarding several important topics. The Palestinian issue will remain on top of the Egyptian foreign policy agenda, he stressed.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi will meet during his stay here with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday, he said, adding that the two sides will take up the recent developments in the Palestinian territories. The meeting comes within the framework of maintained coordination between Egypt and Palestine over several issues, he added.

As for the Syrian crisis, the spokesman noted that the Egyptian stance on this score is crystal clear. Egypt is for a political solution in Syria that helps stop bloodletting and preserve the potentials of the Syrian people and their interests and guarantees the territorial integrity of Syria.

The Syrian issue will be a major point that will be tackled in the statement of the president at the UN general assembly meeting, added the spokesman.

Answering a question on whether president Sisi would meet with US President Barack Obama, especially that the two leaders are staying in the same hotel in New York, the spokesman said that meetings of presidents are subject to certain programs and schedules of the leaders and not subject to the place they are staying at.

He added however that relations between Egypt and the US are strategic and important and that the two sides are keen on pushing up these relations.

He noted that the Egyptian minister of international cooperation headed for Washington on Thursday for talks with officials of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund along with other quarters.
