Cairo - MENA
- Egypt's permanent delegate to the United Nations Amr Ramadan said on Saturday that Egypt has joined the friends of the UN Convention against Torture group.
The group is an informal international forum to promote global efforts to eliminate the crime of torture and encourage more countries to join and implement the convention.
The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1984.
Ramadan said Egypt was one of the pioneering countries that signed the convention in the Middle East and Africa to support efforts to prevent and combat torture and support its victims medically, financially and legally.
"The Egyptian move at the international level is a reflection of the firm commitment of the Egyptian government to eliminate the crime of torture and holding perpetrators accountable," he added.
