Member of the Central Committee of Fatah Movement Mohammad Ashtia asserted that Egypt represents a protection for the Palestinian legitimacy and the Palestinian national project of ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state.

In statements to MENA correspondent in Ramallah, Ashtia said the Palestinian leadership is currently coordinating with the Egyptian leadership in order to ask the UN Security Council issue a number of resolutions related to the Palestinian issue, asserting that Egypt's assuming a non-permanent seat at the UN as of the coming year would have its positive repercussions on the Palestinian issue.

Ashtia also pressed the need for holding an international conference on the Palestinian issue in the presence of all parties to put an end to the Israeli occupation and settle the crisis similar to the crises of Syria, Libya and Yemen.

He noted that all courses of negotiations with the occupation have been doomed to failure and there should be other tracks to resolve the long-standing strife.

The Palestinian leadership also works on other alternatives to the negotiating process through joining more international organizations in order to recognize the rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state, he added.

As for the Arab peace initiative, which was launched 13 years ago, Ashtia said this initiative was not marketed well and the Israeli side gained more benefits from it and nothing was given to the Palestinians in return.

He also said the Palestinian leadership and people are currently working to revitalize the Palestinian issue in the minds of the world.
