Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa expressed deep sorrow over the assassination of Prosecutor General Hesham Barakat.

"Egypt has lost a patriotic and judiciary icon," the minister said in a statement on Monday.

Gomaa praised the late top prosecutor's sincerity in serving the nation, urging a retribution for his murder.

"He was a human in every sense," he added.

He offered his condolences to the family of the deceased, the judiciary members and all Egyptians.
