Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Saturday telephoned his Libyan counterpart Mohammed al Dairi over the recent political and security developments there, spokesman for the foreign ministry Ahmed Abu Zaid said.

The two sides discussed the deteriorating security situation in the Libyan city of Sirte and the appalling humanitarian violations carried out by Daesh terrorists against unarmed civilians there, he added

They also dealt with coordinating Libyan-Egyptian positions in the framework of the Arab League and the United Nations to support the Libyan issue, the spokesman said.

Shoukry affirmed Egypt's commitment to move heavily at the international level to ensure an international support for the Libyan legitimate government and the implementation of Security Council resolution 2214 of 2015, which calls for providing support to the Libyan government, including necessary assistance in the security field and capacity building, the spokesman added.

al Dairi on Friday said Daesh militants are committing acts of genocide against residents in the Libyan town of Sirte.

As many as 30 Libyan civilians were killed in clashes between Daesh and residents in Sirte as locals challenged the militant group in its last stronghold in the country.
