Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal said Thursday that Egypt has resumed its membership at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) after being frozen in 2013 for not having an active parliament.

In a statement, Abdel Aal said he was informed about the decision during a phone call with IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong on Thursday.

During their phone call, Chungong pointed out that the IPU was the first international agency to celebrate Egypt's revolution of June 30, the statement said.

The union's Senior Adviser Ambassador Mokhtar Omar is scheduled to kick off an official visit to Cairo to finish measures needed to reactivate the membership, the statement added.

According to the statement, Chungong told Abdel Aal that IPU President Saber Chowdhury is expected to visit Egypt in the coming week to express congratulations on electing a new parliament.
