Cairo - Arab Today
Egypt's non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council (UNSC) adds a new dimension to the Palestinian cause, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid on Thursday.
Egypt's role as regards the Palestinian issue will feature high as it is the only Arab member in the UNSC and it has been adopting the Palestinian issue all through the history, he told diplomatic reporters.
"Though the peace process was influenced by the current regional unrest and the fact that we have now more crises and issues on the arena, no one can ever say that the Palestinian issue can be put aside," he said.
The latest meetings that grouped President Abdel Fattah El Sisi with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and those that were held among the Arab foreign ministers affirm that the Palestinian issue is still on the agenda of Egypt's foreign policy and of the Arab world's as well, he added.
Certainly, the regional and international circumstances are not at their best to push forward the Palestinian file not to mention the state of frustration felt by the Palestinian and Arab citizen but Egypt will never abandon any effort that might be fruitful, the spokesman noted.
There are many issues that are now under discussion between the Palestinian and Arab officials and the major powers, especially those related to providing protection to the Palestinians, settlement activities and the peace process called for by Abbas, Abu Zeid said.
The Egyptian stance towards the Palestinian issue runs in line with international legitimacy resolutions, the two-state solution and finding a final, comprehensive and lasting solution to the issue, he added.
Egypt seeks to reach a final solution and not to run a dialogue and within this perspective, Egypt together with the Arab League and regional powers are examining the coming steps to take as regards the Palestinian issue.
