Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Dr. Saeb Erekat called on Thursday the International Community and the United Nations to secure an immediate international protection for the Palestinians in the Yarmouk refugee camp in the Syria.
In a press release, Erekat called on the Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the competent humanitarian and international agencies to provide Palestinian citizens trapped inside the camp with the humanitarian needs.
He said that the extermination and murder of innocent civilians, burning and destroying what remains of the camp and the siege of dozens of families in their homes perpetrated by terrorist organizations require an urgent action from the international community to take political and humanitarian responsibilities towards the continued suffering of Palestinian refugees in the camp and to stop the ongoing massacre against them, as well as to support efforts made to end the occupation.
Palestinian people are still paying the price of the Israeli occupation and conflicts in all their whereabouts, Erekat said, adding the time has come to resolve their ongoing plight.
Erekat stressed that the solution is not to absorb the Palestinian refugees in Europe and other countries, or in new camps, but to return to their homes from which they were displaced by force in 1948, according to UN resolution 194, and to end the prolonged occupation and establish of the State of Palestine.
