The Iraqi Council of Representatives has unanimously approved Prime Minister Haider al Abadi's reform plan, aimed at stamping out corruption, reducing government waste and easing sectarian tensions.

Out of 328 members of parliament, 297 MPs took part in the session and unanimously passed Abadi's anti-corruption package.

Speaker Salim al Juburi put the PM's program to a vote without debates.

Abadi's seven-point plan includes ending sectarian and party quotas for State positions, reducing officials' benefits and reopening corruption investigations.

The changes come after weeks of protests by voters angry at the way the country is governed and at the lack of investment in infrastructure.
