Jordan's Border Guards on the border with Syria engaged a group of armed persons trying to infiltrate the borders into the Jordanian territory, killing 12 of them and injuring others, Petra quoted a Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) source as saying Saturday.
The source said the group included 36 people, some of them were carrying weapons while others carried materials that couldn't be immediately identified, adding that army dealt with the situation in accordance with the rules of engagement.
The source indicated that 12 members of the group were killed, some others were injured while the rest fled back to inside Syrian territory. After the confrontation, the army seized 2.1 million narcotic pills.
The JAF will not tolerate any such attempts and will use the necessary force to deal with those who attempt to undermine the country's national security, the source stressed.
