Minister of Justice and Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Yaqoub Al-Sanea said that Kuwait Constitutional Court, since its foundation in 1973, has played a significant role in defending the constitutional legitimacy and overseeing lawmakers' abidance by constitutional provisions.
Speaking at the Union of Arab Constitutional Courts and Councils (UACCC) meeting,which kicked off here on Sunday, Al-Sanea also praised the great efforts of Kuwait's constitutional court and other Arab constitutional courts and councils in promoting justice and safeguarding freedoms.
He underscored that the rule of law is the main driving force for nations' progress and development.
For his part, Kuwait Constitutional Court Chief and the Conference President Yusuf Al-Mutawa said that the meeting focuses on the protection of the constitutional legitimacy and the rule of law.
He emphasized the importance of the meeting in exchanging expertise, unifying stances of the contemporary constitutional issues for the ultimate goals of guaranteeing people's freedoms and rights and establishing the rule of law.
The four-day event is attended by representatives of 14 Arab constitutional courts and councils and the Venice Commission which is an advisory body of the Council of Europe, composed of independent experts in the field of constitutional law.
The conferees will tackle various key issues relevant to the role of constitutional courts in developing constitutional and political systems and safeguarding constitutional rights.
