Lebanese authorities on Saturday warned Syrian refugees whose names are registered by the international refugees agency to abstain from crossing the border back home.
According to a statement issued by the Interior Ministry, Syrian refugees, registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, would be deprived of their status as refugees if they travel back to Syria.
"In process of regulating the entry and exit of Syrian nationals into Lebanese territories, all displaced Syrians registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are to refrain from entering into Syria as of 1/6/2014, under penalty of losing their status as refugees in Lebanon," the statement said.
"The Interior Ministry hopes for compliance with this measure for the safety of displaced Syrians in Lebanon, as well as preserving Lebanon's security and the relationship between displaced Syrians-Lebanese citizens in preventing any friction or mutual provocation," the statement added.
Number of Syrian refugees registered by the UNHCR is estimated at one million.
The decision, which takes effect Sunday, comes two days after tens of thousands of Syrians flocked to their Beirut embassy to vote in presidential elections.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese Army said in a statement that two kilograms of explosives, laden into a vehicle, in the border town of Ersal, blew up wounding two persons.
The town hosts thousands of Syrian refugees.
