Banning Libya from voting in the UN General Assembly was legal, as it didn't pay its financial commitments to the international body, the Libyan UN representative said on Saturday.

Ibrahim Al Dabash said that Tripoli didn't pay such financial commitments since 2014, adding that the outstanding debt reached 20 million dollars.

According to the rules of the UN General Assembly, a country could be deprived of its voting rights if its debts exceeded its contributions in the international body's budget for two years.

The Libyan ambassador said that there were some measures that could allow voting for Libya, but they could cause humiliation to the country's envoy before the body's financial officials.
