Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stressed the importance of the meeting of Libya's neighboring countries in Algeria on Tuesday.

In statements to MENA, the foreign minister said the meeting is held in a crucial phase as it comes after the agreement signed in the Moroccan city of Skhirat, which is expected to be debated by the Libyan parliament soon and also comes hours after reports that Daesh terrorists took control of the Libyan city of Sirte.

He said there is an international consensus on backing the agreement to form a national unity government, adding that there is a desire from the international community to provide support for the Libyan government to help it meet the needs of the Libyan people, achieve stability and confront terrorism.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zaid had said the event will witness the participation of Egypt, Sudan, Algeria, Chad and Niger.

Abu Zaid underlined that the meeting will tackle the ongoing efforts exerted to form a Libyan national government and discuss the plan of United Nations (UN) Envoy to Libya Martin Kobler on this regard.

The meeting came days after talks held between Shoukry and Kobler in Cairo amid regional and international efforts aiming at encouraging the Libyan parties concerned to reach a political solution and form a government.
