Libya's Government of National Accord (GNA) might run the country from the western city of Ghadames, said Lawmaker Siham Sirgiwa on Friday.

The GNA might be operating from Ghadames, or a any city in the south of Libya, until security preparations to host government meetings in the capital, Tripoli, are over, the lawmaker added.

Earlier in December, UN envoy Martin Kobler said his team was in contact with security officials in Tripoli to ensure that Libya's new unity government can operate safely from the capital.

Rival Libyan politicians have signed a deal in the Moroccan resort of Skhirat to form a unity government despite opposition on both sides.

Around 80 of 188 lawmakers from Libya's internationally recognized parliament and 50 of 136 members of the rival Tripoli-based General National Congress (GNC) signed the deal.

The deal called for a 17-member government, headed by businessman Fayez al Sarraj as premier, to be based in the Libyan capital. A presidential council would also serve for a transitional period of two years until legislative elections are conducted.

Libya has had rival administrations since August 2014, when an Islamist-backed militia alliance overran Tripoli, forcing the government to take refuge in the east.
