Morocco announced Sunday that its security bureau dismantled a terrorist cell that was planning acts targeting the Kingdom's security and stability.
The terrorist cell was planning on executing a number of assassinations of Moroccan political, military, and civil figures, the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGTS) confirmed in a statement.
A large amount of arms and ammunition were found with the cell members at time of the arrest, DGTS said, adding that the seized weapons were to be used in a terrorist act.
The terrorist cell was also aiming to attack security units and take over their arms to use them in their attack, the statement said, noting that dismantling the cell is part of a proactive framework of countering terrorist threats against the country.
DGTS also pointed out that the arrested cell have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), recruiting and financing Moroccan youngsters to travel to Syria and Iraq to join the terrorist group's units in these countries.
The Moroccan security bureau affirmed non-stop search and investigation with the arrested under the supervision of the public prosecution before presenting them to justice.
