Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak

Former president Hosni Mubarak and his two sons Alaa and Gamal filed a challenge with the cassation court against a prison term handed to the three in May over the presidential palaces case.

In a retrial on May 9, the Mubaraks received three years of rigorous imprisonment on charges of abusing public funds, EGP 125 million, originally allocated for renovating presidential palaces in order to establish and develop their private property.

They were also ordered to pay a collective fine of about EGP 125 million and return EGP 21 million to the state.

According to investigations, the three used state funds for personal purposes – designing and furnishing their real-estate property in Cairo's posh Heliopolis and Katameya Heights districts and Sharm El-Sheikh and Marina resorts – in the period between 2002 and 2011.

In the first trial on 21 May 2014, Mubarak was sentenced to three years and his two sons to four years in jail, all rigorous terms.
