Jordanian Minister of State for Information Mohamed al Moemeni said that his country has received since the eruption of the Syrian crisis over 1.4 million refugees.

In statements to MENA on Tuesday, Moemeni, who doubles as the official spokesman of the Jordanian government, pointed out that Jordan shouldered heavy burdens as a result of the presence of the refugees on its territories.

The Jordanian official was commenting on reports that some 12,000 refugees are stranded on the Jordanian-Syrian borders.

The United Nations had voiced concern on Tuesday over the fate of the 12,000 Syrian refugees on Jordan's borders with Syria under deteriorating humanitarian conditions.

“The lives of refugees will be at risk in the coming months,” Melissa Fleming, spokesperson of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) told a news briefing in Geneva. “So today the UNHCR appeals to the government of Jordan to allow refugees stranded at the border to enter the country.”
