Riot police and security forces in Fayyoum thwarted on Thursday an attempt by scores of supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi to close a main square in the city.
Messalah Square is located at the entrance of Fayyoum and connects east and west of the city.
Scores of terrorist Muslim Brotherhood (MB) group members gathered at the square and launched fireworks, causing panic among residents.
Riot police and security forces moved to the square, dispersed the protesters and opened the road to traffic.
A number of rioters were arrested.
