Amman - KUNA
The relief agencies, in collaboration with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), on Thursday delivered 10,874 food rations to displaced and poor families in south Syria.
The figure includes 5,893 food rations for displaced families at Sweida, south of Daraa and Quneitra governorates, and 4,981 for needy families, local media reported.
Syrian Minister of Social Affairs Kinda Al-Shamat called on specialized international organizations to open their offices at Sweida governorate along the lines of UNHCR, which has recently opened an office at the governorate.
She noted that the relief aid, coming via the Nasib Border Crossing at Daraa, would be stored at UNHCR's warehouses at Sweida as a prelude to distribution to their beneficiaries at Sweida, Daraa, and Quneitra, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Meanwhile, Tarik Kurdi, UNHCR's representative in Syria, said UNHCR would now be able to distribute relief supplies in the southern governorates without the need to transfer them to Damascus first, noting that other UN agencies operating in Syria would also benefit from the cross-border transport services and would be able to use the warehouse in Sweida, added SANA
