The legislative department at the State Council has agreed to amend an article of the penal code to toughen penalties in abduction cases.
Under the amended article, kidnappers will face life-in-prison sentences that will be toughened to death if abduction charges are coupled with rape.
The amended article has been referred to the Cabinet ahead of sending it to the presidency for ratification.
