A Syrian military source dismissed Friday reports claiming that opposition rebels were close to controlling the Abu al Duhur military airport in Idlib, northwestern Syria.

The stationed military units are, with the support of the Syrian air force, countering assaults against the airport, Sky News quoted a source as saying.

They killed many of the al Nusra Front fighters, the source said.

He added that skirmishes are still ongoing between the two sides, in addition to airstrikes launched by regime fighter jets to hit sites of the opposition.

Earlier, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that the Syrian opposition rebels had advanced toward Abu al Duhur military airport, the last military base controlled by the regime forces in Idlib.
