A conference of the Syrian opposition opened Wednesday in Saudi Arabia with an aim to pursue peace talks.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adil al Ahmad al Junayr welcomed the attendees and voiced hope that the meeting would be successful, according the Saudi press agency.

The Syrian opposition from various parties inside and outside Syria participate in the meeting.

Saudi Arabia is hosting a three-day meeting in Riyadh to try to unite the Syrian opposition before potential talks with the government of President Bashar al Assad.

It is the first time most of the main rebel groups have been involved in peace moves since the conflict began about four years ago.

The Saudi meeting comes amid international efforts to restart peace negotiations with the Syrian government and there is a need to create a delegation to represent the opposition.
