Syrians

More than one million and a half Syrians are living in Egypt and legally treated as citizens in receiving health and education services, Egypt's permanent representative in Geneva Amr Ramadan told a one-day high-level conference in Geneva on Syrian refugees.

Addressing the high-level UN meeting, Ramadan said Cairo assumed its responsibility towards its Syrian brothers who are living equally as the Egyptians.

The diplomat said there are more than one million and a half Syrian nationals living in Egypt with the same rights other Egyptians have.

Ramadan said that Syria’s neighbors cannot alone shoulder the responsibility for caring for refugees as the mission necessitates strong economic potentials.

The Egyptian representative criticized some western states that try to escape the humanitarian responsibility for the Syrian refugees. He deplored the EU-Turkey agreement inked recently on the refugee crisis.

The recent agreement between Turkey and the European Union (EU) regarding the refugees and irregular migration crisis is in clear contradiction with the treaties and principles of international law, he made it clear.

The conference was hosted by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to discuss global responsibility sharing through pathways for admission of Syrian refugees.
