Thousands of residents in Kafr El Sheikh governorate took part on Thursday in the funeral of police Major General Khaled Othman, who was shot dead Wednesday by unknown gunmen in Al Arish, North Sinai.

Othman was wrapped in Egypt's flag and then carried on civil protection vehicle.

The funeral was attended by Dr. Osama Hamdi Abdel Wahed, Kafr El Sheikh Governor, and a raft of security commanders in the city.

Othman received a fatal gunshot when unknown militants opened fire at a security point near Arish police station.

The attack happened when Othman arrived to inspect the forces deployed in the area.

The assailants, driving a white sedan, fled the area following a fire exchange with the forces.
