Lebanese parliament

Leader of the Lebanese parliament's "Change and Reform" bloc Michel Aoun on Thursday called for protests on Friday to demand a new elections law.

Speaking at a press conference, Aoun added that the Lebanese people should act collectively to adopt a fair elections law and to choose a president without circumventing the law.

Earlier in the day, Lebanese lawmakers again failed in their 28th bid to elect a new president and fill the post left vacant since May 2014.

The deadlock in parliament took place against the backdrop of street protests first sparked by frustration over rubbish collection but that have since mushroomed into anger at Lebanon's political class.
