Hungarian national team coach Sandor Egervari resigned late Friday after his side\'s record 8-1 defeat away to the Netherlands in Amsterdam.
The Netherlands, who had already qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, thrashed Hungary 8-1, the heaviest defeat in the country\'s history.
The Hungarian FA\'s president Sandor Csanyi confirmed in a statement early Saturday it had accepted Egervari\'s resignation.
The result effectively ended Hungary\'s chance of coming second in World Cup European qualifying Group D, although a slim mathematical possibility remains with one more round to play on Tuesday.
The 63-year-old Egervari, who took over as head-coach in July 2010, was in charge for 34 matches, taking the team from 62nd spot in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking to 30th.
