Tokyo stocks ended 0.05 percent lower on Friday, as selling ahead of the U.S. jobs report offset buying bolstered by the yen's weakness.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 7.50 points, from Thursday at 15,668.68.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 3.18 points, or 0.25 percent, lower at 1, 293.21.
Major decliners included mining and consumer finance issues, while automaker and marine transport shares moved higher.
The turnover was 1,698.0 billion yen (about 16.12 billion U.S. dollars).
