American Lindsey Vonn put on a burst of closing speed Sunday to win the women's Alpine World Cup super G in Bulgaria. Vonn wobbled in the middle of the bumpy course but rallied in the second half of her run to make up a 0.61 second deficit and win a record 18th career super G race in 1 minute, 15.66 seconds. "I just hit one of the bumps funny and went shooting downhill in the opposite direction that I wanted," Vonn said. "I was way offline and had to chuck it sideways, but thankfully the pitch was pretty steep and I was able to accelerate out of that mistake." Tina Weirather of Lichtenstein took second, just 0.05 seconds behind Vonn. Third place went to Daniela Merighetti of Italy, who was 0.07 seconds behind Vonn. American Julia Mancuso placed eighth. Vonn increased her lead in the overall World Cup point standings to 528 with nine races remaining on the schedule.
