A policeman was shot dead by an "unknown source" in the Makkah Region, the Saudi authorities said on Friday.

    Corporal Khalaf al-Harithi was on duty at a police station in the western region on Thursday evening when he was hit by gunfire from an unknown source, the Makkah Region police spokesman was quoted by Saudi Press Agency SPA as saying in a statement.

    He added that the security authorities have started investigating the incident.
