Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell star in the first trailer for Miss Julie.
The 37-year-old actress portrays the title character, an aristocratic young woman bored and stifled by social expectations. During the course of a midsummer night, Julie attempts to seduce her father's valet, Jean (Colin Farrell). The affair is complicated by their difference in class, and Jean's fiancée Christine (Samantha Morton), a household cook.
The film is directed by Norwegian director Liv Ullmann, and based on the August Strindberg play of the same name written in 1888. The story's main theme is power, specifically the power struggle between men and women and between the social classes. Julie and Jean struggle for control throughout the production, but both lovers are subject to her father's influence as a man and nobleman.
Miss Julie will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
