France: Any de-escalation in Syria to be welcomed

France gave a cautious welcome Tuesday to Russia's surprise decision to pull out most of its forces from Syria, saying any sign of de-escalation in the conflict was to be welcomed.
"We take note of President (Vladimir) Putin's announcements. If they are followed up by concrete action, it would be a positive development," a foreign ministry spokesman said, adding: "Anything that helps towards a de-escalation in Syria should be encouraged."
