Shares on the Paris stock exchange briefly fell more than three percent in late morning trade Thursday, with big plunges by auto giants.
At 1055 GMT, the CAC 40 had slightly recovered but was still down 2.75 percent at 4,270.98 points, a day after closing slightly higher.
