Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), said that the remarkable developments and improvements in the Emirate's electricity and water infrastructure in 2012 are in accordance with the directives and guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. DEWA recorded an increase in desalinated water production capacity of 17.5% in 2012 to 470 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) compared to 400m MIGD in 2011. The number of DEWA's water consumers reached 554,985 in 2012, compared to 532,885 consumers in 2011, achieving a growth of 4.15%. DEWA's electricity consumers increased in 2012 to 624,445, compared to 600,931 in 2011, recording a growth of 3.9%," added Al Tayer. DEWA has also recorded a 10.6% increase to 9,646 megawatts (MW) in installed capacity during 2012 compared to 8,721 MW in 2011. The systemic demand for electricity reached 36,299 Gigawatts per hour in 2012 compared to 34.606 Gigawatts per hour in 2011, recording an increase of 4.9%. Al Tayer said that the number of DEWA's 400 kV substations increased to 18 in 2012 compared to 17 in 2011. The 132 kV main substations totalled 184 in 2012 in comparison to 165 substations in 2011. "The number of 11 kV and 6.6 kV power transformers increased to 26,756 compared to 25,564 in 2011, while the total length of 11 kV and 6.6 kV medium-voltage cables reached 24,942 kilometres in 2012 compared to 23,978 kilometres in the previous year," concluded Al Tayer.
