
Audi driver Timo Bernhard spent Monday night in a hospital for observation after crashing during testing at Sebring late on Monday. Bernhard, who was driving one of four R18s LMP1s taking part in the four-day test at the location of last weekend’s 12 Hours of Sebring, crashed heavily at turn 17 as a result of a technical failure. The German extricated himself from the wreck but was admitted to hospital for medical checks. Bernhard, along with co-drivers Romain Dumas and Loïc Duval, finished second at this year’s 12 Hours of Sebring. A statement from Audi read: “After analysis, it was determined that the same technical problem could not occur on the other test cars. Therefore it has been decided to continue the test.” Audi has four cars present at the test, two R18 E-tron quattro hybrids, one conventional turbodiesel R18 and the No. 3 R18 TDI that took part in the 12 Hours. Eleven of the 12 drivers who will race for the German manufacturer at the Le Mans 24 Hours in June are at the Sebring test.
