Second Deputy Chairman of Shura Council, member of the Supreme Council for Women, Dr. Bahiya Al-Jishi chaired Bahrain’s delegation to the meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in its 57 session allocated for elimination of violence against women. Dr. Bahiya said that the status of women comes in line with the great concern Bahrain is providing to the issue of women’s rights as being considered an invincible part of human rights. Dr. Al-Jishi added that out of this concern, Kingdom of Bahrain has ratified the Convention on the Elimination of Violence against Women in 2002, and is currently studying through the Supreme Council for Women to lift its reservations on the Convention, so that it is applied in a comprehensive manner that does not contradict with the Islamic Sharia. Dr. Al-Jishi highlighted that the issue of equal opportunities has become one of the most delicate and important issues, where Bahrain has now units concerned with equal opportunities in several official and civil institutions. Dr. Al-Jishi also said that the concept of eliminating violence against women is a major concern of the responsibilities of the state in cooperation with the civil community, pointing out that the provisions of the draft law of eliminating violence against women includes the whole family, males, females, children and men who are exposed to family violence. The meeting also discusses the follow up of the recommendations of the Fourth World Conference for Women, as well as the recommendations of the 23rd extraordinary session of the General Assembly under the theme “Women in 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for 21st century, and also doubling the efforts to eliminate violence against women and girls.
