Indian Parliament member Raj Pal Singh said Monday women should be banned from using mobile phones, social activists said. Singh, from Muzaffarnagar, said most problems faced by women today result from the possession of the phones, the Indo-Asian News Service reported. "Our mothers and sisters never had them -- did they die without this gadget?" he asked. Singh suggested that elders take away any mobile phones given to women in their families. Social activists criticized Singh's statement. Arti Mishra said Singh's speech was in "bad in taste" and discriminatory and noted the president of the MP's party is a woman.
